EmpowerHer: A 24-Week Self-Employment Program for Black Women in Nova Scotia

EmpowerHer is a transformative 24-week program designed to support Black women in Nova Scotia who are on Income Assistance (IA) or Employment Insurance (EI) in launching and sustaining their own businesses. Developed by Blk Women in Excellence (BWIE), this initiative provides comprehensive resources, mentorship, and financial support to empower participants on their entrepreneurial journey.

Program Highlights:

  • Business Training: Structured workshops covering essential topics like business planning, marketing, and financial management.

  • Mentorship & Coaching: Access to experienced mentors who provide guidance and support throughout the program.

  • Financial Support: Weekly allowances to assist with living expenses, allowing participants to focus on developing their businesses.

  • Community Building: Opportunities to connect with a network of like-minded Black women entrepreneurs.

Eligibility:

This program is open to Black women in Nova Scotia who are currently receiving IA or EI benefits and are committed to transitioning into self-employment.

Applications for the EmpowerHer program are not yet open. Please stay tuned for updates on application dates and deadlines. In the meantime, we encourage interested individuals to prepare by gathering necessary documents and outlining their business ideas.

The EmpowerHer program is fully funded by the Department of Opportunities and Social Development, formerly known as the Department of Community Services. This department is dedicated to helping Nova Scotians live more independent and healthier lives by providing a range of social services, including employment support and income assistance.
